Description ta2002 2005-01-15 22:18:03 UTC
The device:

http://storcase.com/dataexpress/de110.asp

It has always worked fine with any kernel up
to and including 2.6.6. Starting with 2.6.7
(both vanilla and Gentoo patched), it does
not work. In fact, trying to access any file
on the drive, renders the entire disk I/O
system unusable (entering any command that
requires access to the fixed hard drive
from a console doesn't execute and never
returns).

The machine has an Intel 6300ESB SATA
Storage Controller (I have "Intel PIIX/ICH
SATA support" enabled in the kernel).
The main hard drive (Seagate SATA) appears
to works fine.

I can mount the filesystem on the drive in
the carrier without any problems, but as
soon as I try to read from or write to that
drive, the applications lock up as soon as
they access the hard drive. Eventually, I
can't do anything, and have to reboot the
system.

The manufacturer claims it knows of no
incompatibilities, and tells me that a lot
of people had problems starting with 2.6.7.

I had heard that 2.6.7 brought a lot of
changes to the SATA stuff, and I hoped that
this would get fixed soon, but the problem
still exists in Gentoo 2.6.10-r4.

I still keep a 2.6.6 kernel around to dual
boot with when I have to access the drive,
but this represents a large pain in the
you know what (and all of the 2.6.6 ebuilds
have now disappeared from portage).

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/disk
2. cp /mnt/disk/file /path/to/anywhere
Actual Results:
Maybe a small amount gets copied (about 300k).
After that the console locks up with recovery
impossible.

Expected Results:
Drive should work as it did pre-2.6.7.

does this problem still occur with 2.6.11_rc1 (-mm1?)

Do you mean these sources?

/usr/portage/sys-kernel/mm-sources/mm-sources-2.6.11_rc1-r1.ebuild

I installed them, and compiled the kernel, and
the problem still exists (no change at all).
Comment 4 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-17 16:26:54 UTC
Then please file a bug for this at http://bugzilla.kernel.org as it is not related to gentoo kernels.
