I've written a doc describing the new KDE split ebuilds (which are now in portage). I'm putting the location in the URL field, so that it can be updated without posting many new attachements, until you OK it. I haven't written gentoo docs in the last two years or so, so wanted to run this past you first; afterwards I can commit changes directly. It should also be linked from the desktop docs page, and perhaps from the KDE configuration HOWTO.
I think that it must replace <guide link="/doc/en/kde-config.xml"> with <guide link="/doc/en/kde-split.xml"> for example
Sorry, missed that. Fixed now.
> The most important fact is that very few people (other than KDE packagers, of course) really need to install all of KDE... Maybe that's a bit drastic. It could be: Installing all of KDE can be the right choice if you don't know the packages it is made of, and just want a complete desktop; or if you are setting up a desktop that should be used by many users. Everyone else can gain more time...
Don't put <p> around <ul>...</ul>, for the rest the XML is correct. Would you want this document to be integrated in CVS (fex /doc/en/kde-split-ebuilds.xml or in the desktop project documentation)? Without being in Gentoo's CVS we can't add it to the documentation index (it parses the XML file for the title)...
New version uploaded. Re: #3: changed to read: "Installing all of KDE makes sense if you want to explore the available packages or are seting up a multi-user environment; however, most people use only some of the 300+ KDE apps available. Anyone who really cares", etc. Re: #4: fixed the <p> tags. Yes I'd like this to be in CVS. However, during the next few weeks I'll have to update it pretty often, so I'll commit directly - hope that's ok with you.
Updated the online XML - fixed some typos, added some FAQ items, rearranged some existing text. No changes to the meaning of existing text.
Thanks; do you still intend on changing much? I'm not fond of people hacking away in CVS since there's some policy attached to documentation development (needed in order to have a good process flow in translations and such). I rather prefer patches to bugzilla or even an occasional ping in IRC if you're no docdev.
We'll probably want to update it every week or three for a while. Patches through bugzilla, with a delay of a few days to commit, are OK with me - and if I change my mind we can talk again then...
Thanks, wonderful. It's added to CVS and will be available shortly on a webnode near you - http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-split-ebuilds.xml. Bugs with patches should be easily fixed; I hope I can decrease the current bugflood a bit before the end of next week.
