Is this feature and I have to let Portage do it or a bug/mistake please?

What command are you using? —-changed-use (-U) instead of —newuse (-N) should prevent this - it’s also far less wasteful and generally more useful.

Full output too?

I am using emerge -pvuND @world normally.
I will try to replace -N by -U, thank you.
Comment 4 David Kredba 2021-04-07 07:00:53 UTC
There is only one rebuild after your suggested change in emerge's options:

[ebuild     U  ] media-libs/sdl2-image-2.0.5_p20210328::gentoo [2.0.5::gentoo] USE="gif jpeg png tiff webp -static-libs (-abi_riscv_lp64%) (-abi_riscv_lp64d%)" 12 107 KiB

Can I close the "bug" please?
Comment 5 Scott Howard 2021-04-07 07:18:38 UTC
Should the handbook step that teaches all new users about `--newuse` be changed to `--changed-use`?

emerge --newuse output

Same problem here.

I'm on stable amd64. I'm using —newuse (-N) for *years*.

The main question is : why does some riscv_lp64 ABI related stuff suddenly popup into USE flag configuration on stable AMD64 profile ? Is this expected behavior ?

I don't think so. Can someone confirm ?

Then you’ve recompiled plenty of programs when USE changes didn’t affect you. Suppose you recompile libxml2 with Python 3.8 one day. When 3.6, 3.7 get dropped, even if they weren’t enabled on libxml2, you would rebuild it with -N. It’s a waste.

It’s fixing an experiment that ended up being unnecessary from years ago. So yes, it’s expected, but unfortunate.

Good idea!

Yes I know that. But I started to use gentoo when --changed-use did not exist. Old habits. Thank you for the quick response.

This is expected behaviour according to https://projects.gentoo.org/pms/7/pms.html#x1-11000011.1.1 (see the bullet list next to the "profile-iuse-inject" label). In particular, the values of USE_EXPAND variables will be injected as use flags into the ebuild's IUSE_EFFECTIVE. Since USE_EXPAND are defined in the base profile, they will affect all profiles (i.e., ABI_RISCV will be seen in amd64 profiles).

So what happened here is that ABI_RISCV was listed in USE_EXPAND at the time of your previous rebuild of these packages, so Portage had registered it in the packages' metadata in /var/db/pkg/. Removal of ABI_RISCV then triggered the rebuild. This is unavoidable, unless we would have kept the workaround indefinitely (it was in place since 2020-09-18, i.e. for about half a year).

Thanks, this explains a lot.

Addendum: This explanation was only partly correct, because ABI_RISCV was never listed in USE_EXPAND_IMPLICIT. So in addition, the ebuild would have to inherit multilib-build.eclass (which used to explicitly add the abi_riscv_* flags to IUSE), in order to trigger the rebuild.
Comment 13 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2021-04-19 18:08:51 UTC
Closing this since the behavior is correct, if unexpected.
