Description Eduardo Coutinho Scalabrin 2021-03-19 19:09:26 UTC
I compiled the kernel gentoo-sources-5.4.97 with gcc-10.2.0-r5 and the system crashed, I had to turn off the pc on the power button. I also compiled the driver for my nvidia video card (nvidia-drivers-460.39-r1), I don't know if that was the program that crashed, I just know that I didn't find anything in the logs and with two hours of use at most the system crashes.

So it crashes and you can't access dmesg, right ?

97 is nine versions back, can you try the latest 5.4 which is 5.4.106 as of this writing?

This could be something fixed. If this is your nvidia driver, this will go in a different direction.

Hello, Mike!

Yes, that's it, I can't access dmesg because the computer freezes completely!
I'll do the tests with version 5.4.106 and version 5.4.97 like this: I compiled both versions with gcc-10 but the drivers I compiled with gcc-9, later I send the result!
Comment 3 Eduardo Coutinho Scalabrin 2021-03-22 13:36:19 UTC
I did the tests with the two kernels compiled with gcc-10 and both had problems, the computer crashed completely with both.

If I compile gentoo-sources-5.4.97 with gcc-9 I have no problem, I didn't do the same test with gentoo-sources-5.4.106.

Anything at all in /var/log/messages? Can you attach it from boot to crash? maybe there's a clue in there.

Does it crash if you leave it in console mode and not in X ?

Have you ever used the Magic System Request Key?
You should be able to enable with :

sudo echo “1” > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/admin-guide/sysrq.html

Once configured, you can try Alt + SysRq + r – after typing that combo, try to use the Ctrl + Alt + F1 to switch to another console and maybe get a dmesg
Comment 5 Eduardo Coutinho Scalabrin 2021-03-23 12:42:52 UTC
I apologize, but I'm not going to do any more tests, because my computer has a lot of data and I'm afraid that it will lose data or damage the hardware, I'm sorry!

I understand. Good luck, let us know if anything changes

Hello, Mike!

I decided to retake this bug, I hope I can help!

I am attaching two logs, from messages.log and kern.log.

The problem so far has only occurred in graphical mode, but I'm going to test it in console mode.

The Magic System Request Key did not work for me, as the computer really froze.

The log is still about gentoo-sources-5.4.97
Could you try as mpagano previously suggested, using the latest 5.4 which is 5.4.106?

Hello, Alice!

OK, I will test with version 5.4.108, because with version 5.4.106 I also found the same error, can be?
Comment 12 Eduardo Coutinho Scalabrin 2021-03-30 14:15:34 UTC
I did the tests with gcc-10 and kernel-5.4.108: same result, the computer crashes completely and I can't access dmesg.

Now I'm using gentoo-sources-5.10.27 with gcc:10 and I don't have a problem anymore and I also changed the CPU frequency scaling governor to performance.

Thank you all!
