Description Dirkjan Ochtman (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-12 09:13:43 UTC
My emerge sync won't work! I don't have any clue what the problem is. Internet connection is fine, as evidenced by pinging google.com (so DNS works) and retrieving mail. Tried it with both rsync.eur and rsync.nl. I have rsync 2.6.3 installed.

root@supaari manuzhai # emerge sync
Notice: (-2, 'Name or service not known')
>>> starting rsync with rsync://rsync.nl.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...
>>> checking server timestamp ...
rsync: getaddrinfo: rsync.nl.gentoo.org 873: Temporary failure in name resolution
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(94)
>>> retry ...

Reproducible: Always

This is a temporary failure in name resolution - your DNS could be down, or a number of other things could have happened. Reopen if the problem still occurs in 24 hours.
Comment 2 Dirkjan Ochtman (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-13 08:55:41 UTC
Still doesn't work. Besides, this problem had been occurring several days before I reported it. So I think DNS errors are not the problem.

1. Can you ping rsync.nl.gentoo.org?
1a. Are you sure you are using an l and not a 1, I, or |?
2. Can you ping/sync to rsync.gentoo.org?
3. Can you rsync at all? Perhaps some firewall is blocking rsync traffic?
Comment 4 Dirkjan Ochtman (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-13 11:54:21 UTC
Bug is gone, I fixed the problem. It was a really weird problem though.

I think I fucked up resolv.conf by adding in an extra nameserver.
