From the README of the repository (https://gitlab.awesome-it.de/overlays/gitlab):

After Daniel from awesome-it quit maintainership mid November 2020, I took
over in December. The overlay will stay on gitlab.awesome-it.de and as long
as we use GitLab on Gentoo at our university institute I'll try to keep it
up to date.


repositories.xml still has Daniel as the owner.

Update it.  You should have access to data/api.git.

Yes, I'm the new maintainer and the correct entries in repositories.xml would be:
      <email>prote@fmi.uni-stuttgart.de</email>
      <name>Horst Prote</name>

Can/Must I do anything here?
