I'm not quite sure whether those are bugs or just "strange" features of the latest tetex release: [1] /usr/local/share/texmf is ignored while texconfig searches /usr/share/texmf-local. The latter directory won't be created. [2] The (tc)dialog of texconfig is gone. It's now just the (good old) command line output - again. Did I miss something very fundamental? Is this supposed to be a reasonable change? I searched for hints or changelogs concerning this - but so far: nothing.
The second problem is being fixed in the next revision of the (currently masked) ebuild. It took a long time to track down, but I think I've got it. :) As for the second one, I'm going to check with the higher-ups on what to do, as right now all local packages are installed into the main texmf tree. I may end up removing texmf-local and making it texmf flat.
Concerning the "local path" problem: Why not simply setting some sym link from /usr/share/texmf-local -> /usr/local/share/texmf ? That would be quite compatible :-)
Ok, I've found the places to change in order to fix the texmf local situation. I need to know tho - why do we need to have a local packages directory separate from the system-wide?
Excuse me if I'm that outdated, but /usr/local/share/texmf is where I put things like: myfootnote styles, myletter styles, myfax styles, myfancy fonts and everything I'd just like to test. I modified e.g. edmac macros over two years now to make them do what they're supposed to do, for me that is (they where intended to be used with plainTex and just got some minor enhancements to "work" with latex and 2e). Sometimes I don't rename packages - just for \usepackage{xyz} backward compatibility. But I move them to the local path. Since it's the last location in $PATH those get used even if there are doubles ... Who knows what an $ emerge unmerge tetex might do? (I do know - my changes will be lost.) That's the reason for me.
That's a pretty persuasive argument. I'll see if I can get the changes committed tonight to have TEXMFLOCAL=/usr/local/share/texmf .
Thanks a lot! (Hope I'm not the only one who benefits ...)
Fixed!
