The tar version supplied by Gentoo isn't patched yet and thus still has this problem. Please note that this problem only occurs when your system is uclibc-based.

A patch can be found here, which works great for me.

tar patch

This patch lets tar work correctly with bzip2.

we dont support tar-1.14 yet in uclibc becuase we havent gotten around to adding that patch

tar-1.15.1 now in portage
