I believe the problem jms is trying to point out is not with spectacle or anything, but rather some optimization in portage, that, I admit, I don't fully understand. But sometimes it shows the packages it needs unmasked (or keyworded) to upgrade the package, and sometimes it just says "the update has been skipped due to unsatisfied deps". If I had to guess, it has to do with --autounmask option or something.

Had the same problem, no autounmask used here.

If you don't use --autounmask-keep-masks as is the default setting, then you don't get hints from Portage as to what dependency is missing and you are on your own to figure this out.

Bugzilla is not for user support, #gentoo or the forums are better in that regard.
