Description Sein Schatten 2005-01-02 08:41:33 UTC
1. the genkernel does not include netfilter. this should be explicitly stated. also you should include a better manual kernel description and you should say to read through the manual description and use genkernel --menuconfig all before compiling the genkernel. also it is worth a notice to look through every point in the kernel menu, even with genkernel. for example it does not use the correct processor for me. among other things.
the manual description lacks some things, imo. but that is not bad because the the help in the menu is quite good.

2. the grub part was completely useless for me. it didnt help one bit. it took me several reboots with chrooting from livecd. it is a book with seven seals. no explanation was hd0,0 is or so. and a link to grub manual is not good when doing a networkless installation. this thing needs extensive rephrasing. also what bothers me alot was that i had to jump back to the partition part of the handbook because i couldnt remember the partition scheme you used in your examples. make a link to the part whenever you are referring to it.
the lilo section was okay, grub was useless. explain more and better what you must do.
3. mirrorselect must get a notice what it does. i wasnt able to emerge --fetchonly all components because the servers mirrorselect selected didnt had all components so i had to track down the changes mirrorselect had done and delete the line so emerge can use other servers.
4. for stupid idiots like me it is better to tell in the section to choose in what time zone one is that in the folder zoneinfo are other folders. i had linked to europe and correct would be europe/berlin.
5. put in the offline manual on cd the security guide. i think it is better when partitioning your system to make certain partitions now and change fstab accordingly. give home, var/tmp, tmp own partitions and make a restrictive fstab

the rest of the guide is brilliant. without it i wouldnt be able to install gentoo.
many thx to ya all.

About 1), genkernel is meant specifically so that users don't have to read through the entire menu config. Yes, you can, but it's not mandatory. I believe it's more than normal that the default genkernel doesn't include everything you want, but it should suffice for most users (especially those not willing to learn about kernel configuration immediately).

The manual kernel description indeed needs some improvements, probably because 2.6 will become the default. I'm sure this will be handled well in 2005.0. We won't tell the users to use genkernel --menuconfig if they want to use the manual configuration though, that's a choice we leave up to the users. We want to keep a non-genkernel section since it's heavily demanded.

2) I can't really improve beyond what it states already, but I'm open for suggestions.

3) is a bug in that mirror, all mirrors should have all components

4): when you list the contents, you should see the difference between directories.

5 is a wontfix, the LiveCD should only contain the installation instructions, not the entire documentation repository. There's no end otherwise, 'cause some people would want the kde config guide on it, others the gnome config guide, etc.

If you're planning on a secure installation you should read the security guide out front because it dictates a lot.

Marking this as INVALID; if you feel this is incorrect, please create a new bugreport with just that single bug you are questioning; it's quite difficult to track individuals bugs if they're all mentioned in one.

1. i think a firewall/packetfilter is necessary for online activities. and not stating that it is deactivated by default is a mistake. i recommend you make a small section in manual config and point from genkernel to it.

2. you should look at it with the eyes of a newbie. not with your professional eyes. its not that easy to understand the syntax of grub. you have nowhere stated that hd0 means the first hd and thus is hda and the next 0 mean the first partition which is equivalent of hda1, not to mention that root (hd0,0) is the boot partition (i was confused because i have a root part and a root partition and several others). (if what i say is correct :-O) [yes, you stated like a small note windows is in hda6 and by that i could extract the correct use of the grub syntax but hey, you can do that better and more explicitly, right? ;) :)]

4. not when you dont know ls -la. and not when you dont have different colors for different things. you know, when you write for newbs like me, you cant take that knowledge for granted. ;) :P

5. i can understand that, yes. but a small line to think about partitioning and using an own partition for different mountpoints is a must. dont you think that a lot of user stick with your example?
