I couldn't decide if I should file this bug under xorg or firefox, or at all, I'm rather confused by this. Listed as blockers when upgrading to experimental xorg-x11-6.8.1.901, were mozilla and mozilla firefox. Due to freetype. So I unmerged mozilla and mozilla firefox, merged freetype, merged xorg, then merged mozilla and mozilla firefox. xorg works, mozilla works. Mozilla firefox is a different story. It's window comes up in gnome 2.8.1, and it's just a grey box within. There are no errors on STDOUT. Trying to exit via the X in the upper right fails, and eventually gnome asks if I would like to force quit it, which works. Also, if I switch away from the desktop it's on and come back, whatever was in the same location on the screen is shown within firefox window, as if it isn't updating at all. I'm attaching a screenshot, please let me know if there's anything else I can do. Created attachment 47311 [details] Screenshot of blank firefox
I went back to x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3 and mozilla-firefox is now working fine.
Now I've gone back to xorg-x11-6.8.1.901, this time with the font-server USE flag, and things are now working. Perhaps that was it. Perhaps this can be closed, I'm not sure.
Assigning to x11@ for reference, presuming they'll close it as CANTFIX. This sort of thing won't happen when USE flag dependencies are in Portage, but until then little can be done.
Okay thanks, USE flag deps sure sound handy.
I did more or less the same, unmerged firefox, updated freetype and xorg. Then I tried to recompile firefox, but it failed. mozilla-firefox-1.0-r3 (marked ~x86) compiles without a glitch. Now I have freetype-2.1.9 and xorg-x11-6.8.1.901. Did'nt change my USE flags, already had font-server.
Seems fixed
