Description Robert Hencke 2004-12-30 16:55:08 UTC
On a fresly installed Gentoo system, with GDM set as the default login manager. GDM does not allow any user to log in. When an attempt is made to log in, GDM comes back with "Authentication Failure", without even asking for a password. When emerging and using wdm, the same problem was encountered. Commenting out the DISPLAYMANAGER in rc.conf starts up xdm instead, and xdm seems to work just fine.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. On a freshly installed system, emerge GNOME, and set gdm as the default display manager in rc.conf.
2. Restart, and attempt to log in as any user.

Actual Results:
GDM, without asking for a password, replies with "Authentication Failure"

Expected Results:
GDM should at least get to the password field, and log the user in as normal.

I do not know what kind of information I should post, except 'emerge info'. If
there is any other kinds of log files that would help in solving this bug, just
let me know and I'll post them.

post gdm logs in /var/log/gdm/* . Are you positive its not some tmpdir thing where you have set your permissions wrong ?
Comment 2 Robert Hencke 2005-01-08 15:21:46 UTC
I am not sure to be honest. I have been doing some fiddling around since then and I think it may have been a problem with my stage2 tarball (it was 2004.3 for athlon xp), since when I did an 'emerge -e system', all the issues I'd been having seemed to straighten themselves out. Maybe it was the USE flags the stage2 tarball was compiled with? Sorry I don't have the problem to fiddle with anymore.. maybe if anyone else comes across it they should try 'emerge -e system' though. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

there's not much bug left to handle then, closing.
