Description Christian Funke 2004-12-29 02:33:37 UTC
Whenever I start an OpenGL the picture on my display freezes. The computer is still reachable by ssh, but killing X or the OpenGl applications helps nothing. The only thing that helps is a reboot. My videocard is raden mobility 7500.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Login into X
2. start glxgears

Actual Results:
Desktop picture freezes

An Update: The Opengl screensavers work, but glgears still freezes the system
Comment 2 Tom Van Doorsselaere 2004-12-29 15:12:52 UTC
Using the native ati-drivers I encounter a similar problem. All (including screensavers) OpenGL applications crash my X-server (instead of locking it up). Maybe these two things are related?

I don't get any helpful logging messages. In /var/log/Xorg.0.log I get the following error:
--------------------
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
--------------------
And in the other logs gdm complains:
--------------------
[gdm] gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
--------------------

Possibly my troubles are caused by the bad ati-drivers. But still there may be a connection to the problems reported above.
Comment 3 Adam Jackson 2004-12-29 16:05:59 UTC
reporter: please try disabling page flipping and/or depth moves, and also see if the DynamicClocks option (radeon man page) has any effect.

re comment #2: you cannot use any currently-release fglrx driver with xorg 6.8.x.
Comment 4 Konstantin 2005-01-11 08:34:20 UTC
hi,

the same behaviour here:

Using IBM Thinkpad T40 with Radeon 7500 mobility

I've tried some standard configs, but nothing helped.
The only thing I can do, is rebooting, because the grafic card
seems to crash or the driver(maybe kernel driver).
The screen stays the same till the notebook turns of or boot up
the bios.
The reboot is only possible, because I've configured a ACPI key to
do this, no other keys are working after a start of glxgears or any
other 3D Application.
