Murmur systemd unit is wrong, and 'systemctl start murmur' command hangs. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. use systemd 2. emerge murmur 3. systemctl start murmur Actual Results: systemctl start murmur becomes stuck, and times out after a while. murmur actually starts and works, however. systemd[1]: Starting Mumble Daemon... systemd[1]: murmur.service: Can't open PID file /run/murmur/murmur.pid (yet?) after start: Operation not permitted systemd[1]: murmur.service: start operation timed out. Terminating. systemd[1]: murmur.service: Failed with result 'timeout'. systemd[1]: Failed to start Mumble Daemon. The problem is that in the unit file, both Type=forking and PIDFile=/run/murmur/murmur.pid are specified. In this scenario systemd will wait for the PID file to appear. However, it will never appear there, as murmur does setuid on its own before writing the pid file, and thus lacks the rights to write to /run, and even if it had the rights, it doesn't try to create a missing directory anyway. The solution would be to make systemd 1) create /run/murmur directory 2) run murmur under murmur user directly, which also changes the owner of the created /run/murmur directory [Service] This is likely an upstream problem, as Gentoo does not change the related scripts and configs much.
