But still is not in portage. Thank you for your attention. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
zebra is obsolete. check out quagga
Yes. You right. Moreover. As mentioned in package.mask zebra has many problems with security. And bad license... But in the current situation we have (zebra # ls ChangeLog files Manifest metadata.xml zebra-0.93a.ebuild zebra-0.93b.ebuild zebra-0.93b-r1.ebuild zebra-0.93b-r2.ebuild ) files in portage that hardly be ever used. I think it's good idea to remove unnecessary files from portage.
so, do we keep this package in portage tree or not? I've tried to bump it but seems that ospfapi patch must go, along with ospfapi local USE flag. also, zebra seems to be currently unmaintained. the last update (0.94) was made in 2003/11/27. I would vote for a removal of this one. The following tasks should be performed: - append "move net-misc/zebra net-misc/quagga" to profiles/updates/1Q-2005 - remove net-misc/zebra from tree - remove ospfapi local USE flag - remove "!net-misc/zebra" dependancies from all quagga versions
I agree to the removal of zebra. > I would vote for a removal of this one. The following tasks should be performed: > - append "move net-misc/zebra net-misc/quagga" to profiles/updates/1Q-2005 > - remove net-misc/zebra from tree yep > - remove ospfapi local USE flag The ospfapi USE flag gets used in the Quagga ebuild as well. We should not remove this USE flag. > - remove "!net-misc/zebra" dependancies from all quagga versions yep
amir are you going to take care of removing it and making the changes? It's been masked for over a year now.
I'm still not sure that this is what we want to do. There are peoples out there staying with Zebra, not moving to Quagga. Do you all agree to remove the ebuild?
A willing gentoo maintainer would be needed to keep the ebuild upto date. As it stands the existing ebuild in portage has some old security problems. I vote for the steps outlined in comment #3
amir, I tried to bump it but the old ospfapi patch failed to apply. I personally think that this package don't worth the hussle and it seems I am not the only one. if you are in doubt, you could post a warning on gentoo-dev and wait for possible reactions. not so long time ago - a year I think - I was a zebra user. there is no reasonable explanation why anyone should want zebra instead quagga. quagga is a better choice in every aspects (stability, features, active community support, etc). I can only think to one reason, namely fear of unknown, but this is not reasonable. if some user really dislike the idea of switching to a better routing daemon, it should be doing that on his own, not waste space in our common tree.
Ok. Then it's decided. We remove the old zebra ebuild. Alin, would you like to have the honor, or should I?
since you are the maintainer, I think you should have the honor of throwing the first hand of dust on zebra's coffin ;)
> I would vote for a removal of this one. The following tasks should be performed: > - append "move net-misc/zebra net-misc/quagga" to profiles/updates/1Q-2005 done. > - remove net-misc/zebra from tree done. > - remove ospfapi local USE flag this still gets used by quagga. > - remove "!net-misc/zebra" dependancies from all quagga versions we can go for this now. I will close this bug. Rest in peace Zebra...
thanks amir
