I have also had a xgcc failure on x86.  This was when downgrading keywords from ~x86 to x86 so gcc 3.4.2 was the compiler being used.  Although, sys-devel/gcc-3.3.4-r1 did emerge correctly.

Most of these bugs are different, so they should probably have separate
reports... but since nobody's in the CC, I'll just ignore the secondary bugs for
now...

Dmitri, are youu still having this problem with gcc-3.3.6?

No. I think it had something to do with my toolchain being built by different gcc versions at different 
times. I ran "emerge -e world" and was able to build gcc-3.3.x and gcc-3.4.x without problems 
afterwards. I guess this bug can be closed?
