emerge samba fails because it cannot find samba-2.2.3a.tar.gz. Looking on the 
distribution site, I see an updated version.

`emerge rsync ; emerge portage -u ; emerge rsync ; emerge samba`
see if that fixes your problem

he was talking to me via e-mail ...
below is the data extracted from his last one ...
it looks like he is just running an old version of portage ... but i wont punt 
this bug till i can verify

Hmm, I can emerge some packages, so things are not totally hosed.

 emerge rsync was failing. As suggested, I changed the entry in /etc/make.conf 
for SYNC=. Now rsync works and emerge samba does as well.
