I started pulseaudio, probably as part of the login process for the xfce desktop, and as soon as I unplugged my webcam and plugged it back in on another USB port, it didn't come back as a detected input device on xfce's pulseaudio plugin. It didn't show up until I killall'ed pulseaudio and caused it to cold start, where it probably detected it anew. Unfortunately this workaround left behind any client applications that were using pulseaudio. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start the pulseaudio daemon 2. unplug and then replug a webcam 3. observe as it's not detected Actual Results: not detected Expected Results: it would notice and be listed again I'm not sure which packages may be at fault here, I can supply version information.

It is sad to read that you have problems with the webcam. The situation seems to be a bit more complicate and requires some analysis. We can not help you efficiently via bug tracker. The bug tracker aims rather on specific problems in .ebuilds and less on individual systems. I have had very good experience on the gentoo IRC [1] with questions like this. Of course there are also forums and mailing lists [2,3]. I hope you understand, that I will close the bug here therefore and wish you good luck on one of the mentioned channels [4]. Please reopen the ticket in order to provide an indication for an specific error in an ebuild or any gentoo related product. Upstream support confirmed that I was somehow setting the device's profile to off. A little curious how it got set that way to begin with or why it's ignoring it on cold start of the daemon but that's a separate issue. Marking this as pebcak.
