emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=sys-libs/gdbm-1.8.3:0/0=".
(dependency required by "dev-lang/perl-5.30.3-r1::gentoo" [installed])
...

but nothing newer than sys-libs/gdbm-1.18.1-r1 exists in portage.

1.18.1 is indeed more than 1.8.3. I suspect this is actually a slot rebuild issue or something like that.

Can you come onto the IRC for support, and provide teh full output?

[SIGH]

vision deficiency won out.  i didn’t see the 1 (one) in 18....

oddly it complains about missing gdbm even with USE=-gdbm....

The full command used + output + emerge --info would help a lot if you can
