Description Hank Leininger 2020-09-20 00:53:09 UTC
chromium-86.* builds for me fine, but when running, I get a stream of warnings to stderr like:

[248:279:0919/175120.888430:ERROR:xproto_internal.cc(128)] Cannot send request of length 22052304
[248:279:0919/175120.929452:ERROR:xproto_internal.cc(128)] Cannot send request of length 22052304

And the browser is unusable: parts of the page do not render, artifacts from the previously loaded page are left behind, need a mouseover to update that region of the screen, etc.

First experienced with www-client/chromium-86.0.4240.30

Dropped back to www-client/chromium-85.0.4183.102 and the problem went away

Tried www-client/chromium-86.0.4240.42 and it's back.

xproto_internal.cc does not existing chromium-85.*; I think it was created in -86.* related to this overall effort:

https://monorail-prod.appspot.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1066670

The check and a "Cannot send" error message were first added in Chromium commit d8e54db12e0f2fc3c1ef1be2767bf24a4681b40e, but have been moved around a bit since then.

I'm currently using:

sys-devel/gcc-9.3.0-r1
sys-libs/glibc-2.32-r1
x11-base/xorg-server-1.20.8-r1
x11-base/xorg-proto-2020.1
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-450.66

Can you please post your emerge --info and also the USE flags for your chromium build in a comment?

Ah, yes of course:

www-client/chromium-85.0.4183.102::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="hangouts js-type-check (pic) proprietary-codecs pulseaudio suid system-ffmpeg system-icu tcmalloc widevine (-component-build) -cups -custom-cflags (-headless) -kerberos -ozone -ozone-wayland (-selinux) (-system-libvpx)" ABI_X86="(64)" L10N="-am -ar -bg -bn -ca -cs -da -de -el -en-GB -es -es-419 -et -fa -fi -fil -fr -gu -he -hi -hr -hu -id -it -ja -kn -ko -lt -lv -ml -mr -ms -nb -nl -pl -pt-BR -pt-PT -ro -ru -sk -sl -sr -sv -sw -ta -te -th -tr -uk -vi -zh-CN -zh-TW"
CFLAGS="-march=znver2 -O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-march=znver2 -O2 -pipe"

(That's the currently downgraded chromium-85, but I had no different settings for chromium-86.)
Comment 3 Hank Leininger 2020-09-26 18:27:52 UTC
Tested chromium-86.0.4240.53 and I cannot reproduce this issue; either it's been fixed upstream or something else was wrong that an intervening X restart / nvidia driver reload fixed.

This bug can probably be closed unless someone comes along soon having the same problem.

Thanks for feedback. If it happens again, it is best to open a bug upstream at https://crbug.com, reopen this bug and add a comment here with link to upstream bug.
