Version 16.0.0 Release-Date: 2020-09-14 VMware-Workstation-Full-16.0.0-16894299.x86_64.bundle Build-Number: 16894299 Adds significant functionality and fixes open problems. Reproducible: Always
Waiting for the kernel module patches to catch up: https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/tree/master
(In reply to Ștefan Talpalaru from comment #1) Not meant to hurry - only as a hook for information. "New Guest Operating System Support" - besides others - claims support for Fedora 32, thus kernel series up to 5.6 should work; but that series has already been swapped out or Gentoos MPT, and 5.7.19 is marked EOL since late August. A new branch "tmp/workstation-16" has already been created, introducing "kernel_read()" and "kernel_write()" for versions 5.8+ : [ https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/tree/tmp/workstation-16 ]
Three days ago, it moved 'official' : [ https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/tree/workstation-16.0.0 ]

libgnome-keyring added to my overlay. We're going to keep the Workstation 15 ebuild around for a while, since 16 comes with new license keys. The corresponding kernel modules now support the 5.8 kernel.

app-emulation/vmware-workstation-16.0.0.16894299 is now available in my overlay. Upstream has removed vmware-workstation-server (and support for shared VMs), hostd, vmware-vim-cmd, vmware-wssc-adminTool and a long list of configuration files. It was worth waiting to see what the Arch Linux maintainer does about it: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vmware-workstation/
Thanks very much!
(In reply to Ștefan Talpalaru from comment #7) > app-emulation/vmware-workstation-16.0.0.16894299 is now available in my > overlay. Thanks a lot! CONFIRMATION: WORKSFORME Tested with "the usual suspects" for some hours by now. Hint: License key upgrade has to be entered by running as root, e.g. "sudo vmware" - otherwise it cannot be saved to /etc/vmware. Hint: Obey the ewarn: "Don't forget to run '/etc/init.d/vmware restart' ..." Hint: Unfortunately, the current bundle seems not to have embraced the latest Tools package; therefore, please check the version info indicated by vmware tools icon. If outdated, update *from inside* your VMs as described in earlier versions of this bug family. https://www.vmware.com/support/packages.html points you to --> http://packages.vmware.com/tools; 'latest' currently points to "/45848/tools/releases/11.1.5" dating from from "19-Aug-2020 04:15" In case you intend to create a VM by Workstation and move it to another (ESXi) instance later, remember to select 'complete'. Hint: You might "emerge -aC gnome-base/libgnome-keyring" now. > Upstream has removed vmware-workstation-server (and support for shared VMs), Yes, as previously announced and now hinted to in the Release notes (c.f. associated URL above) --> Product Support Notices > Removal of Shared VM feature Shared virtual machines (Workstation as server) has reached end of life and been removed from VMware Workstation 16. > Removal of restricted virtual machines Restricted virtual machine has reached end of life and been removed from VMware Workstation 16. Hint: VMware continues to provide vSphere Hypervisor / VMware vSphere ESXi free of charge. > It was worth waiting to see what the Arch Linux maintainer does about it: @ Stefan: Sorry - could not grasp what you are pointing at exactly ? Kind regards!
HINT: Exploiting the "Manage" -> "Change Hardware Compatibility Wizard", you can upgrade the "Virtual Machine Hardware Compatibility" e.g. from "Workstation 15.x" to "Workstation 16.x" (current), subject to the condition that you do not need to transfer/run your VM e.g. to/on any other, older (ESXi -based) HW.
