Description Pablo De Nápoli 2004-12-11 08:09:37 UTC
I'm having trouble playing videos, both with xine and mplayer, using xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3
What happens is that when I start an X session and play a video for the first time it works fine. However, if I try to play a second viideo (after quiting from xine o mplayer) the ouput window turns into blue, I can hear the sound track but I can not see the image (the window remains in blue). I need to kill the X server and start a new session to be able to see another video.

I suspect that this is caused by some incompatibility of xine/mplayer with the new
X server (as it use not to happend with the xfree86 X-server 4.3.0-r7)
Perhaps some clean up operation fails.

I'm using

media-libs/xine-lib-1_rc7
media-video/xine-ui-0.99.3-20041022

My video card is identified by lspci as

"VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. ProSavage KM133 (rev 03)"
I'm using the savage driver.

Here is my "emerge info"

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.open an sesision with xorg-x11 and play a video with xine or mplayer
2.close xine or mplayer
3.start a second video

Actual Results:
the windows turns into blue, I can hear the music but not watch the video.

The video should be played normally.
Comment 1 Stian Skjelstad 2004-12-11 09:11:07 UTC
Do you use the xv (xvideo extension) ?. MPlayer you can disable this by using another output driver like this:

mplayer -vo x11 mymovie.mpeg
Comment 2 Pablo De Nápoli 2004-12-11 11:42:07 UTC
Yes, I'm using the X video extension (it seems to be a problem related to it, since without it there is no blue window)

However, this problem does not happen every time times, but only some times (and I don't know why)
Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2004-12-12 01:00:15 UTC
ive seen this before on my nvidia card (in both windows and linux) and it was always just a driver/hardware screw up ... rebooting the OS 'fixed' it for me

basically doing video output using hardware acceleration yielded blue screen while using 100% software made it work fine
Comment 4 Stian Skjelstad 2004-12-12 13:33:52 UTC
Sounds like hardware and/or nvidia driver bug. I personally have an integrated

0000:02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU] (rev a3)

that is useless. Tried Xorg, XFree86, several kernels, AGP options, different driver versions, and it always produces the same pixel errors for some seconds after I start X before it kernel panics, freezes, reboots the machine or X segfaults. Which of those four fatal-results are random each time.
Comment 5 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-06 16:21:11 UTC
X11 herd can think of something about this?
Comment 6 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-30 03:27:10 UTC
Tried the latest xorg? Please report on 6.8.2-r2 and 6.8.99.8.
Comment 7 Pablo De Nápoli 2005-06-01 07:55:44 UTC
Yes, this problem seems to be fixed in xorg-x11-6.8.99.8

I recomend to anyone having the same problem as myself,
upgrading.
Comment 8 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-06-01 15:52:01 UTC
Thanks for the report.
