Description Alec Warner (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2020-08-24 19:00:11 UTC
Currently we receive hosting from the OSUOSL for free. Now that the finances are in better shape I'd like to discuss with the OSL an ongoing financial support model as they continue to host a significant portion of Gentoo's infrastructure.

For more clarity:

https://osuosl.org/donate/faq/#how-much-money-are-you-trying-to-raise

The OSL budget is split into two pieces, service income and donation income. In the past we have done one-off donations to the OSL; often when requested by the OSL director. I'm discussing with the OSL:
 - Switching to a service based approach.
 - Switching to an annual donation.

Its unclear that there is a large difference here; but I'm having more discussions with the OSL leadership on what their preferences are. If a service contract is too much work its likely we will have some kind of annual donation program to support the OSL.

We may also consider that Donations to the OSL are tax exempt (as they are a tax-exempt nonprofit.) In lieu of explicit donations from Gentoo Foundation Inc to the OSL; we might consider a fundraiser in Gentoo where the donations do not go to Gentoo, but instead go to the OSL fund directly (reaping a tax savings for Gentoo and for users who contribute to the drive.)

antarus: you previously opened this bug. In years that we do not have any negative growth (e.g. due to large expenses), I believe we can continue to make a contribution to OSL and also help in OSL's fundraising drives.

My recollection on this front was to establish some month as "OSUOSL month" and swap paypal accounts for that month; so we would need to open a (second) paypal account specifically for that.

There were advantages with this approach on tax terms (as we would be raising money for a tax exempt nonprofit, if we segmented the accounting we could avoid paying taxes on these donations as the OSUOSL is an exempt organization and this would be a pass-through transaction.

IIRC: I believe we spoke to the CPA about this but I need to check our records.

Depending on our tax burden it may be more work than its worth (e.g. if we raise 500$ for the OSL and pay 10% of that in tax, I'd rather just donate 50$ extra as opposed to maintaining a second paypal account and do all the accounting for it, etc.)

In lieu of the above we could donate 10% of our profits every year to the OSL; I'll consider some kind of motion with a cap that we can pass in the future.
