Recently I added HAL in USE and rebuild the packages that depend uppon it (nautilus-cd-burner,...). Now nautilus-cd-burner wont burn! When I try to burn an ISO image , or a custom data cd , after clicking on the burn button nautilus-cd-burner displays a box: Please replace the in-drive media by a rewritable or blank media. I have tried inserting both blank and RW cds , and clicking OK , but the box just comes up again , nautilus-cd-burner just wont take the cd. Burning with k3b works -> not a cdrtools or cdrom problem. This all started after adding HAL in the use flag , before adding it , nautilus-cd-burner worked fine. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.add hal in USE 2.emerge --deep --newuse world 3.try to burn a cd Actual Results: Error box: Please replace the in-drive media by a rewritable or blank media. Expected Results: Burning Portage 2.0.51-r3 (default-linux/x86/2004.2, gcc-3.4.3, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.9-gentoo-r9 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.9-gentoo-r9 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 ccache version 2.3 [enabled] Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r6,sys-devel/autoconf-2.13 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r2,sys-devel/automake-1.5,sys-devel/automake-1.4_p6,sys-devel/automake-1.6.3,sys-devel/automake-1.7.9,sys-devel/automake-1.9.3 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.15.92.0.2-r2,sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.8-r1 Headers: sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1-r1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r7 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -fprefetch-loop-arrays -fforce-addr -falign-functions=4" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -fprefetch-loop-arrays -fforce-addr -falign-functions=4" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms test" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.ITDNet.net/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X aalib alsa arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cups dba doc encode esd f77 fam flac foomaticdb fortran gd gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 guile hal imagemagick imlib jack java jpeg junit kde ldap libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmap motif mozilla mpeg mysql ncurses nls nptl oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib perl png postgres python qt quicktime readline sdl slang spell ssl svga tcltk tcpd tetex tiff truetype unicode usb vhosts x86 xml xml2 xmms xv zlib linguas_en"
and hal is actually running ?
Yep , it is. I have not touched hal config after the emerge , could it be that hal is missconfigured or something ? Ivan Yosifov.
hmmm my initial guess was that it maybe a problem with your hardware somehow, giving back the wrong info about whats in the drive. Could you check what it sais on the different media properties for your particular drive ? use the hal-device-manager pack, the storage.cdrom.* properties are probably the ones you want to check out.
I have storage.cdrom.cdr = 1 storage.cdrom.cdrw = 1 storage.cdrom.dvd* = 0 (the cdrom has no dvd support) storage.cdrom.read_speed = 9172 storage.cdrom.support_media_changed = 1 storage.cdrom.write_speed = 2116 The cd model is LG GCE-8525B (http://www.lge.com/catalog/prodmodeldetail?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=CTG1000502&categoryId=CTG1000500&parentId=CTG1000439&modelPrefix=40CWDA&globalCode=GCE-8525B&globalSuffix=000000&model=0) ,in case it matters. The mentioned properties appear to be static - they dont change if I change media in the cd (rw or not , blank or not). Not sure if this is normal. Another thing - I have set in Apps->Desktop Prefs->Removable Storage "Mount removable media when inserted" , yet when I insert a cd , I have to mount it manually - it does not automount. A third thing - in computer:/// I have 2 cdrom icons: "CD-ROM" and "CD-RW Drive". Yet I have only one physical cdrom. Not sure if this is normal , too. Ivan Yosifov.
hmm wrong bunch of properties, check the properties of the actual media & look for the volume.disc.* set.
The volume.disc.* set appears only after mounting the cd. I insert the cd , mount it , and in the hal-dev-manager under Computer->IDE device(master)-><CDROM MODEL> a new node appears "k3b data project" (the cd was recorded with k3b). The propertis are: volume.disc.has_audio = 0 volume.disc.has_data = 1 volume.disc.is_appendable = 0 volume.disc.is_blank = 0 volume.disc.is_rewritable = 1 volume.disc.type = "cd_rw" When I try to start burning , the cdrom is unmounted (naturally) and the "k3b data project" dissapears. Should hal provide this information when the cdrom is not mounted ? Ivan Yosifov.
Hello , A BIOS tweak fixed the problem. More detailed explanation in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1889792#1889792 Ivan Yosifov
