At some point later (at least an hour or two) I can login normally. I haven't done a gnome profile for a long time, so I have no idea where to look. I do know that this most recent update broke sddm as alternate DM (which did work until a few days ago, now it freezes with a black display and a dead keyboard, ie no more flipping to VT1, etc).
