Description Matthew Lane 2004-12-07 18:53:50 UTC
I am currently using xmms-1.2.10-r5. I did not previously have this problem prior to an attempt to try out the version in ~x86. I believe that this was the version I tested, assuming that it hasn't been updated since last week: xmms-1.2.10-r9

This is what the ouput of emerge -uDpv xmms reports for each version:

[ebuild R ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r5 +3dnow +alsa -cjk -debug -directfb +esd -ipv6 +mikmod +mmx +nls +oggvorbis +opengl +oss +xml 0 kB

media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r9 [1.2.10-r5] +3dnow +alsa +arts -debug -directfb +esd +flac -ipv6 -jack -lirc +mad +mikmod +mmx +nls +oggvorbis +opengl +oss -sndfile +xml

I do know that one of the dependencies was new when I compiled it. I had compiled it using --newuse for the first time I upgraded it. My guess is that one of the new dependencies broke something.

And before you ask, no its not that my mp3's have errors. They all play back normally with mpg123, mplayer, and (ugh..) Windows Media Player.

Two mp3's that I can name off-hand are:
Metal_Gear_FirstImpressions_OC_ReMix.mp3
Chrono_Trigger_MagusDecayOfHope_OC_ReMix.mp3

They both can be obtained from http://www.ocremix.org/

I am dialup and would rather not upload them to you.

I will however attach a sample of the first mp3 output with the xmms Disk Writer plugin. The error is audible there with any player.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Play one of the mp3's I mentioned.
2. The error is right at the beginning.
3.

Actual Results:
Audible bleeps or blips at the start of playback.

Expected Results:
Regular playback, like any of the other media players.

5 second audio clip of Metal_Gear_FirstImpressions_OC_ReMix.mp3 that shows the error.

This is the output of xmms when using the Disk Writer plugin. This is the
output "heard" when playing the file through the speakers. The error is right
at the begining, the sample is 2 seconds in length.
Comment 2 Matthew Lane 2004-12-07 20:05:30 UTC
Just a note about your attachment policy. I had to upload this file 3 times over my pitiful 28.8 dialup connection, only for the submission program to reject it because I didn't put in a description that it liked. EG. wav (audio/wav), or just audio. Sorry for this being off topic, but we're having a nasty storm wind storm here, and I don't want to delay my shutdown any longer than neccessary.

Comment 5 Jeremy Huddleston (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-08 02:33:09 UTC
are youu using mpg123 or mad to play this sound? If youu don't know, disable one and try the other... does changing between them "fix" it? If so, which is broken? Please also try updating xmms-mad to 0.7
Comment 6 Matthew Lane 2004-12-08 18:08:18 UTC
All of the plugins listed were enabled. I disabled the MAD MPEG Decoder plugin and it solved my problem.

After I upgrade the mad plugin, I will post my reults.
Comment 7 Matthew Lane 2004-12-08 18:15:43 UTC
UPDATE:
 media-plugins/xmms-mad-0.5.6-r1
This is the latest version of xmms-mad that is currently in portage.

I will leave it disabled for now.
Comment 8 Jeremy Huddleston (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-08 19:55:25 UTC
emerge sync and try xmms-mad-0.7

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -v xmms-mad
Comment 9 Matthew Lane 2004-12-09 00:30:44 UTC
Ok. I updated portage and updated to the version in ~x86. Both of the songs play back normally as far as I can tell. Thanks for the help.
Comment 10 Jeremy Huddleston (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-09 01:30:28 UTC
ok... then I think I'm gonna push this into stable.
