Sorry I can't give more info. When I emerge rte it errors out as well as killing
my X session. (Quite a bug) Zapping uses this lib so it is also broken.

I tried emerging from a terminal and was able to see the error but unfortunately
my mouse in console mode doesn't work so no cut an paste.

can you do me a favour and do this:

emerge rte &>~/rte.log

that will put a file called rte.log in your HOME dir (so if you do it as root it
will be in /root

Please, if you could give us logs for both an attempt in X and an attempt in
console.

actually, shad, I've just checked in a new ebuild for it (no revision bump). 
Please emerge rsync and try this again...
