Description nvaert1986 2020-07-30 13:04:32 UTC
After updating to sys-apps/systemd-2.45.5 yesterday, I had several issues and my system refused to fully boot / login.

- After switching from GDM to any TTY the system froze and would just show the bootsplash. Upgrading to sys-boot/plymouth-0.95-r1 (which is ~amd64) resolved the issue (re-emerging the old version did not resolve the issue).

- sys-apps/fwupd-1.3.10 no longer starts properly / hangs when running fwupdmgr / gnome-software no longer finds updates. Upgrading to sys-apps/fwupd-1.4.4 (which is ~amd64) resolved the issue (re-emerging the old version did not resolve the issue).

- After logging in gnome wouldn't load and I would just be shown another GDM login prompt again. This was caused by the getty@ttyX.service being disabled for tty2 to tty6, while they were enabled before installing systemd-2.45.5 (enabling them again resolved the issue)

- On another system the kde-plasma/breeze-plymouth theme no longer works with systemd-2.45.5 either causing it either just to hang or to hang on 1 display without being able to input anything with sys-boot/plymouth-0.95-r1 or hanging (with nvidia drivers). I tried re-emerging the theme, but it didn't resolve the issue. Switching to another theme did resolve the issue.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Problem 1:Upgrade to sys-apps/systemd-2.45.5 with sys-boot/plymouth-0.94-r1 installed
Problem 2:Upgrade to sys-apps/systemd-2.45.5 sys-apps/fwupd-1.3.10 installed.
Problem 3:Upgrade to sys-apps/systemd-2.45.5 when using GDM.
Problem 4.Upgrade to sys-apps/systemd-2.45.5 when using KDE / SDDM.
Actual Results:
The system froze completely while showing the plymouth bootscreen, which occurred on 2 completely different systems (1 Intel Core i7-8750H laptop and 1 AMD Ryzen 2700X system)

Expected Results:
A system that boots.

Not sure if this is going to get broken up into separate bugs, but if this is going to be a dumping ground then I'll note that the upgrade disabled systemd-networkd for some reason. Re-enabling of it was all that was necessary.

It seems like systemd-provided services getting disabled by default is a bit of a theme here.

So far that is the only service that I've discovered having been disabled. Otherwise it is working fine including booting embedded in dracut.

systemd-2.45.5 does not exist.

Further, please file separate bugs for separate issues.
