I guess you need to install aspell and the English dictionary aspell-en. Correct me if I'm wrong.

# emerge aspell aspell-en
Comment 2 postmodern 2004-12-05 03:28:56 UTC
emerged aspell and aspell-en, problem persists.
Comment 3 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-06 09:45:34 UTC
did you have aspell installed at all at that point ?
Comment 4 postmodern 2004-12-06 19:01:41 UTC
I re-emerged abiword after having emerged aspell and aspell-en and that has fixed this issue. Might want to include aspell/aspell-$LANGUAGE in the RDEPEND of abiword, if it is not already there in the portage-cvs.
Comment 5 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-07 02:53:06 UTC
those are implied trough enchant.

closing not-a-bug
Comment 6 postmodern 2004-12-07 11:57:09 UTC
Just to clarify enchant isn't emerged as well. What do you mean "implied" if abiword did not emerge aspell, aspell-en or enchat? Is this not a DEP bug?
Comment 7 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-07 13:03:27 UTC
no it's not.. don't reopen without proof, we know what we're doing here.

You _do_ need spell in USE to get spellchecking in abiword.. this is NOT a bug.
