Last time I checked, i.e. a few minutes ago, the current stable release (1.6.1-r3) breaks the stable amd64 dependency tree when USE=nftables is set due to conflict with net-misc/ethertypes. Moreover, the 1.8 branch seems to handle complex ip(6)tables rules (along the likes of those produced by e.g. libvirt or docker) better when running on top of nftables.
