The "Computer" window generated on the gnome desktop by Nautilus no longer allows the selection of custom icons for any items therein. This has worked in the past, and in fact I have several previously set custom icons for mounts listed in /etc/fstab which can no longer be changed from the UI. The icon selection window appears, and an icon can be selectetd therein, but the icon displayed in the Properties dialog and in the window remains unchanged. The "Remove Custom Icon" button works, and restores the icon to its default value. "Select Custom Icon" works fine for real files|directories listed, for instance, in my home directory in the "fmouse's Home" window. I can change the icons manually by editing ~/.nautilus/metafiles//computer:%2F%2F%2F.xml but the Properties "Select Custom Icon" button doesn't appear to be accessing and editing this file, or any other, since a find(1L) w. grep doesn't show that the filenames of selected custom icons show up anywhere in the ~/.nautiilus file heirarchy. To make sure this isn't an issue related to local (~) version upgrade, I created a new local account and logged into it from gdm, so all the default configs were generated. I saw the same problem in this account. This is a minor annoyance, but ought to be addressed since Gnome/Nautilus is a professional quality system and the bells and whistles should work if they're presented to the user. My Nautilus and gnome-desktop versions are both at 2.8.0. If I can be of any further help in addressing this, please let me know.
I can reproduce this and have reported the problem upstream. http://bugs.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160836
upstream issue
It's possible that this is a feature, not a bug. Some of the icons are dynamic, i.e. they change depending on the status of the item referenced - more of them if I run a dbus daemon which brings up a different set of icons in this window. Allowing user modification of the icons in this window might interfere with this little bell/whistle.
