Description Chris Pritchard 2020-07-05 16:58:13 UTC
When creating packages for local use under GLEP 81, it is difficult to identify UID / GIDs to use that will not clash with ebuilds added to the main tree.

I would like to propose opening up a small range (perhaps 900-949) to be marked as reserved for local overlay use, that way there is no potential for a clash of UID/GIDs if acct-user or acct-group packages are used in local ebuilds.

The idea was that overlays are going to use the dynamic assignment (with range of 999 downwards). Of course, right now this will still somewhat mix with old ebuilds but eventually these are going to disappear from ::gentoo.

Reserving a static range won't be very helpful as it won't prevent cross-overlay collisions. If you really want to use a static range, I'd suggest choosing a random prefix in very high (>65536) range.

I think, we can close here. All packages in ::gentoo are migrated to GLEP-81. As far I remember, we didn't wanted to have a local range in uid-gid.txt.
