Pretty much as the title says, I'm trying to install on a old laptop, I followed the installation guide but when I try to update the system it just won't compile and I can't get an error message other than killed, so I don't know how to fix this.

You don't have enough ram to compile gcc. You can try to setup some swap space and check if it passes.

closing as we cannot upgrade users RAM yet.
Unfortunately tests for required RAM are imperfect too.
Please reopen if there is a bug in the ebuild.
