The "media-fonts/intlfonts" claims to supply fonts for Japanese (kana and kanji), but after emerging it (and rebooting), still neither Mozilla nor Konqueror can display Japanese web pages. Furthermore, after emerging, many packages spit out instructions that must be followed manually. This package produced no such instructions, so if there is an additional step, I cannot determine what it is. NOTE: I am LEARNING Japanese. My primary language is English, but I would like to be able to view pages that contain Japanese characters. I have marked this bug as "major" because I am completely unable to view Japanese web pages under Gentoo Linux. It is very important to me to be able to do this, and I prefer not to have to find a Windows box and use IE instead. If "major" is not appropriate, administrators should feel free to alter it. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Try to view a Japanese web page 2. emerge intlfonts and reboot 3. Try to view a Japanese web page Actual Results: Still can't view Japanese characters. Expected Results: Either (a) made necessary configuration changes so that X11 and/or applications can find Japanese fonts, or (b) provide instructions explaining the necessary manual configuration changes. Could someone from the cjk herd help out? :)
Intlfonts is fixed-width font, so you may want to emerge kochi-substitute, sazanami and/or ja-ipafonts (they are TrueType fonts, so you don't have to do anything else but run emerge to use them with mozilla and konqueror).
I got a personal reply from him and he said the original problem was solved by emerging kochi-substitute. Perhaps we need up-to-date English documentation to setup Japanese environment, just like liquidx write Chinese howto at http://dev.gentoo.org/~liquidx/
