The various versions of dev-java/sun-jdk (1.3, 1.4, etc) should really have SLOTs defined for each of the versions. There are some applications that won't work using 1.3, and some that seem to refuse to work under 1.4, though I don't remember which ones exactly at the moment. The same was true in the 1.1 and 1.2 days; typically you'd have a few different versions installed and just use the one that the application required. Therefore, I propose that the 1.3 versions be changed to SLOT=1.3, and the 1.4 versions changed to SLOT=1.4. I could post some diffs or something if you'd like . . .
They already do. It was fixed a few days ago.
