Current guide does not tell how to get localized versions of gettext enabled software actually working (except for the part referring to LANG variable, which might work on occasions automagically). A chapter on enabling nls use flag, emerging gettext and varying locale settings of LC_* variables might be in place. I could do this update myself in December if no one else has time.
Here's a suggested patch, my English is not too good and I'm not much of a documentation writer, but hopefully that'll explain a bit more comprehensively the locale mess :-)

It'll need a bit of editing, I can take care of it next year unless another docdev gives it some TLC before I'm back.
