Description Daniel Harding 2020-04-19 11:48:52 UTC
The generic Linux OS tarball for Zoom contains only the binary plus the necessary libraries and data files needed to run the binary. However, the packages for other operating systems, such as the .deb for Debian and Debian-derived distributions contain desktop integration files such as a .desktop file and official icons. By switching to the .deb, it would be possible to install the official upstream versions of those files.

I have a .ebuild for Zoom that predates the official Gentoo one which uses the .deb packages for Zoom. I'm happy to create a PR adapting the official Gentoo ebuild to use .deb if that would be useful (as the official Gentoo ebuild is otherwise generally better than mine).

I have already reported the missing icon upstream. (I cannot provide a link, because they don't have a public bug tracker.) So we'll add it as soon as it will appear in their tarball. IMHO the slightly different icon is a very minor issue and not a sufficient reason to switch to a different distribution format.

As for the desktop file, is there any concrete problem with the one that the ebuild currently installs?

Sounds reasonable. Wasn't complaining, just trying to make a suggestion. Thanks for all your work to get this packaged up for Gentoo!

No, the Gentoo-provided .desktop file works fine.

Resolving as UPSTREAM, because they shouldn't omit files in some of their packaging formats.
