Description Jan Hrabe 2020-04-17 17:22:52 UTC
After switching from consolekit to elogind, the sddm no longer displays the login screen. Unfortunately (and that may be a separate bug), there is no useful error message in the messages or sddm.log.

It seems than only the /usr/bin/sddm is started but not the sddm-helper and sddm-greeter, and neither the related /usr/bin/X on terminal 7. I can still start the X with startx after login in at another terminal, using "exec startxfce4" or even

exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session startxfce4

in the .xinitrc.

The loginctl also does not list the sddm session, just my login.

Reproducible: Always

Actual Results:
Blank VT 7 screen

Expected Results:
sddm login screen on VT 7.

This system uses an older nvidia graphics card with nvidia drivers version 390.132-r1, and xfce4. The profile is default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop.

I tried to recompile all packages listed by equery hasuse consolekit but that did not help.

Do you have CONFIG_DRM enabled in kernel? You should.

> Do you have CONFIG_DRM enabled in kernel? You should.

No, I did not, because https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVIDIA/nvidia-drivers discourages this kernel option. With this option enabled, the sddm now works as expected. Thanks for the advice!

Not sure how many users had this problem but it might be useful for others if the installation script checked this kernel option or if it was documented on sddm or elogind wiki pages.
