Description Tiago Freire 2004-11-19 05:21:14 UTC
Hi,

I just updated my system, and I think the maintenance tasks, like using etc-update, can be optimized to be less burdensome. the less time users/admins spend in maintenance, the better.
O noticed one very clear example of file which could have been replaced automatically. /etc/sudoers had only a few comments added in the beginning, and a blank line removed from its end.
There is no configuration changed, therefore it does not need to ask me whether I should update or not. Files which the ONLY differences are:
I) comments
II) blank lines
III) whitespace
should be merged automatically
Unless, of course, the configuration syntax is very very weird and these things have meaning for it. Most of the files don't, however. 'Weird' config files could be flagged so that this behavior does not apply.

etc-update already does this. You might want to double check that
you didn't overwrite something you wanted.

Already does this.
