Description Paul Osmialowski 2020-04-04 11:16:35 UTC
Can't say it's a bug as everything seems to work, yet seeing error message like that does not make me feel OK about it.
The utilities exported by coreutils (ls, cp, rm, etc.) are now bash scripts calling coreutils binary, e.g. /bin/ls looks as such:

#!/usr/bin/coreutils --coreutils-prog-shebang=ls

Unfortunately, some programs use readelf on /bin/ls apparently assuming it's the easiest way to determine default binary format on multiarch systems.

E.g. while builting QtCore one can see:

 * Running qt5_qmake in src/corelib
readelf: Error: /bin/ls: Failed to read file header

Reproducible: Always

[ebuild R ] sys-apps/coreutils-8.31-r1::gentoo USE="acl caps gmp multicall nls (split-usr) xattr -hostname -kill (-selinux) -static -test -vanilla" 0 KiB

Tested on various systems with different emerge --info outputs, e.g.:

Portage 2.3.89 (python 3.6.10-final-0, default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/plasma/systemd, gcc-9.2.0, glibc-2.29-r7, 5.4.28-gentoo x86_64)

That's the result of building sys-apps/coreutils with "multicall" USE flag being enabled.

I recommend to not enable this USE flag.

CCing qt team as this affects their packages...
