I have a Compaq Presario 1640 Laptop with 32Mb of RAM, 4GB hd, 24x CD. While attempting to boot from the install cd, my computer consistantly locks up when trying to mount the root filesystem. It checks different file system types and I get a kernel panic each time as no filesystem is found. I can specify another root and it finds it perfectly, but it panics because it can't find init ... I am fairly certain that the problem stems from the fact that I only have 32MB of RAM and the boot scripts on the CD are attpempting to create 16 8Mb ramdisks and its not exactly working correclty. I don't know enough about the gentoo boot process to know if my guess is right. But I also attempted to use kernel params on boot to change the size of the ramdisks but that didn't solve this issue.
A minimum of 64MB is required for install from LiveCD.
