Description AD Rutledge 2004-11-15 01:03:01 UTC
MAJOR errors:
Instructions referring to Code Listing 7 in Chapter 4, Preparing the Disks, say to bind mount /dev to /mnt/gentoo/dev _before_ untarring a stage, which results in an error when untarring the stage. This should be moved to Code Segment 3 of Chapter 6.

Minor errors:
CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS Section in Chapter 5 list IA32 examples -- should list PowerPC examples.

Enhancements:
Is there a list of valid locales to list to for Code Listing 11 in Chapter 6. If there is, we should have a link to it so a user can make an intelligent choice as to which locales to enable depending on their needs.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.
Comment 1 AD Rutledge 2004-11-15 01:34:35 UTC
Another enhancement:
Perhaps a note on how to enable B-Tree indexing in ext3 should be listed in the Filesystem table in Chapter 5.
Comment 2 AD Rutledge 2004-11-15 06:19:33 UTC
Major issue:
Something should be noted on USE="nptl" and the need to emerge --nodeps --oneshot linux26-headers before bootstrap.sh (or preferably, this could be fixed in bootstrap.sh, but in the short term we should document it)
Comment 3 AD Rutledge 2004-11-16 05:23:46 UTC
Enhancement:
Perhaps the VIDEO_CARDS="yourvidcard" entry in /etc/make.conf and some options that are likely for common PowerPC computers (mach64, r128, radeon, fbdev, and whatever the nVidia possibilities are?) should be documented in the install guide.
Comment 4 Michael Hanselmann (hansmi) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-16 12:33:43 UTC
I was able to reproduce the USE="nptl"-problem. I think this is a general problem and affects other platforms too. How should we proceed?
Comment 5 Kelly Price 2004-11-17 17:41:26 UTC
Old World Macs may want to check bug 71627 for some items into booting them from the CD.
Comment 6 Xavier Neys (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-21 10:16:40 UTC
FYI, ppc is the only arch that still mounts /dev before untarring stages. Probably a leftover from the days when bootloader was not installed at the end of the procedure. Our PPC guys will look into it, I hope.

CFLAGS in chapter 5 are common to all arches, if anything special about ppc boxes needs to be mentioned, please let us know.

locale -a should display all available locales. Not 100% sure it is available on a liveCD. Can anyone give it a try?

Comment 7 Jochen Maes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-12 03:23:08 UTC
Mount dev has removed a while ago, CFLAGS should be dealt with in the global doc, i'll talk to Swift about it.
the ext3 enhancement isn't really something that should be in this doc imho, if so we need to add all options for all filesystems and kernels etc, that would bloat up the doc.
Videocards thing is explained in the video doc. shouldn't be in here, isn't base install but configuration of a system. Remember this is the core install doc.

i'm resolving this bug.

greetings, Jochen
