Description Michael Cummings (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-08-27 06:55:11 UTC
Noticed while trying to compile the gentoo- flavor of the 2.4.19 kernel that
there were modules missing compared to the vanilla 2.4.19 kernel. In
particular, the drivers/net/wireless modules were incomplete (noticed because I
rely on one of the new orinoco_pc? (pci? can't remember offhand)).

Chad and I have nothing to do with the kernel. That's all lostlogic so I dunno
what he did. I'll CC him this.

Which kernel Mike? And be more specific? Which modules? Are you using the
built-in PCMCIA and Wireless? Cause you shouldn't be. You should be using pcmcia-cs.

gentoo-2.4.19-r7 was missing these modules. They are present in the vanilla
2.4.19 series, but not the gentoo release. PCMCIA-cs doesn't cut it here. I
noticed in particular that the Prism2 kernel modules were missing, which as far
as the linksys wireless pci card is concerned, are the only thing that works -
pcmcia-cs merely bombs horrendously, and wlan-ng is extremely bugy. The built in
kernel module support for the Prism2 pci card support, however, works very nice.
The gentoo release of the kernel (in case you go looking) was missing the sub
options for these modules, but had the top level for the prism2 wireless (just
not that part that lets you say "hey, this is a pci card").

The reason I originally submitted this bug was because it was my understanding
that the gentoo kernel was built on top of the vanilla, not seperate from it. If
that isn't the case, just let me know and I will close this bug. I learned
enough this last time to start patching the gentoo kernel with source from the
vanilla :)

try 2.4.19-r9 or the latest lolo-sources for me... do some testing with all
pcmcia-cs and pcmcia stuff if you can.
