I'm using KDE 3.3.1 and xscreensaver-4.16. Logging in as root I've the whole list of screensavers, loggin in as normal user I've only the KDE specific ones. Looking into /usr/kde/3,3/applnk/System/Screensaver/ there are the .desktop files of both kde and xscreensaver scrennsavers; the only difference between a kde .desktop file and a xscreensaver one is the line: TryExec=xscreensaver xscreensaver is in the path and has the following permissions: -rwsr-x--x 1 root root 239816 Nov 8 11:24 xscreensaver changing xscreensaver permission in this way: #chmod a+r /usr/bin/xscreensaver -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 239816 Nov 8 11:24 xscreensaver fix for me the problem. I don't know if it has security drawbacks. I don't even know if it must be consider a xscreensaver bug or a kde one. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge xscreensaver 2.USE="xscreensaver" emerge kdeartwork 3.open as root and as normal user the screensaver settings window Actual Results: as root I see the all the screensaver(kde specific + xscreensaver), as normal user I see only the Kde ones. Expected Results: In both cases the whole list of screensavers Portage 2.0.51-r3 (default-linux/x86/2004.0, gcc-3.3.4, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.4.26-gentoo-r9 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.26-gentoo-r9 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.8-r1 Headers: sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.19,sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.21-r1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/gentoo/ ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/gentoo/ ftp://mir.zyrianes.net/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow X aalib alsa apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cscope cups doc encode esd f77 fam fla flac foomaticdb fortran freetds gd gdbm gif gimpprint gpm gtk gtk2 guile imagemagick imlib java jpeg junit kde libg++ libwww mad mcal mikmod motif mpeg mysql ncurses nls odbc oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl plotutils png postgres python qt quicktime readline samba sdl slang spell ssl svg svga tcltk tcpd tetex theora threads tiff truetype unicode x86 xine xml xml2 xmms xv zlib"
Thanks to the guys in the forums, this bug has been almost surely tracked down as a kde bug and reported upstream: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89434
The gentoo-forums-thread is the same you pointed out, but, in my opinion, the bug is different. After a little further(and better) investigation in bugs.kde.org, I think that this bug is pertinent: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92000 that is labelled as resolved but it has no direct solutions for gentoo users.
Sorry, I did not read carefully enough, it's indeed 92000. I just sent a suggestion there, let's see if it makes sense.
The patch was applied to HEAD (will be in kde-3.4) I don't know if it's worth applying locally to kdelibs or just advertise a workaround.
Minor issue, known and fixed upstream.
