Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2019-12-15 13:38:19 UTC
At first, I have --autounmask=y... but even with that, it seems that portage is failing to simply unmask more packages and, instead, it prefers to disable newer python support:
# emerge -avuDN world

 * IMPORTANT: 1 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

dev-lang/perl:0

  (dev-lang/perl-5.30.1:0/5.30::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    (no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

  (dev-lang/perl-5.28.2-r1:0/5.28::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    dev-lang/perl:0/5.28= required by (dev-perl/File-ShareDir-Install-0.110.0:0/0::gentoo, installed)
                 ^^^^^^^^
    (and 9 more with the same problem)

NOTE: Use the '--verbose-conflicts' option to display parents omitted above

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by dev-python/setuptools-42.0.2::gentoo
# required by dev-python/certifi-2019.11.28::gentoo
# required by dev-python/urllib3-1.24.2::gentoo[test]
# required by dev-python/dulwich-0.19.6::gentoo[test]
# required by dev-python/reno-2.7.0::gentoo
# required by dev-python/stevedore-1.30.1::gentoo[-doc,test]
# required by dev-python/cliff-2.12.0::gentoo
# required by dev-python/stestr-2.1.0::gentoo
# required by dev-python/pbr-4.2.0-r1::gentoo[test]
# required by dev-python/mock-2.0.0::gentoo[test]
# required by dev-python/freezegun-0.3.10::gentoo[test]
# required by dev-python/python-dateutil-2.8.0::gentoo[test]
>=dev-python/pytest-4.6.7 -python_targets_python3_7 -python_targets_python3_8

Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No] No

 * In order to avoid wasting time, backtracking has terminated early
 * due to the above autounmask change(s). The --autounmask-backtrack=y
 * option can be used to force further backtracking, but there is no
 * guarantee that it will produce a solution.

Trying to run it further also fails with:
# emerge -avuDN world --jobs=9 --autounmask-backtrack=y --backtrack=1000

 * IMPORTANT: 1 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=dev-python/atomicwrites-1.0[python_targets_pypy(-)?,python_targets_pypy3(-)?,python_targets_python2_7(-)?,python_targets_python3_5(-)?,python_targets_python3_6(-)?,python_targets_python3_7(-)?,python_targets_python3_8(-)?,-python_single_target_pypy(-),-python_single_target_pypy3(-),-python_single_target_python2_7(-),-python_single_target_python3_5(-),-python_single_target_python3_6(-),-python_single_target_python3_7(-),-python_single_target_python3_8(-)]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- dev-python/pytest-4.6.7::gentoo (Change USE: -python_targets_python3_8)
(dependency required by "dev-python/pytest-4.6.7::gentoo" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "dev-python/setuptools-42.0.2::gentoo[test]" [ebuild])

(dependency required by "dev-python/stevedore-1.30.1::gentoo[test,-doc]" [installed])
(dependency required by "dev-python/cliff-2.12.0::gentoo" [installed])
(dependency required by "dev-python/stestr-2.1.0::gentoo" [installed])

(dependency required by "dev-python/freezegun-0.3.10::gentoo[test]" [installed])
(dependency required by "dev-python/python-dateutil-2.8.0::gentoo[test]" [installed])

Simply keywording dev-python/atomicwrites allows to continue... until I hit next package that needs to be keyworded too. Previously autounmask was doing this work for me... but now I need to manually add them

Thanks

I forgot to unmask python_3_8 USEs,

sorry for the noise
