Description Brian O'Reilly 2004-11-06 10:37:30 UTC
Starting xine either by itself, or with the filename of a video file as an argument fails due to an error returned by ld.so:

[Sat Nov 06 <13:30:18>]\>xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.2cvs.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.start xine
2.xine never starts
3.

Actual Results:
xine fails immediately

Expected Results:
software should have shown the video file.

I believe that this problem is also impacting mplayer.

I get the same problem with the Muine player:

I unmerged the newest xine-lib and xine-ui and got the older versions (1_rc6, 0.99.2). I still get the same error message ... I tried other players like kaffeine aswell, but I ran into the same problem

mplayer works for me, xine does not, failing with that error.

A very similar problem is discussed at

https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1724

Supposedly the last post shows how to reproduce this.

Also, this seems to be the same as http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52374
Comment 6 Brian O'Reilly 2004-11-11 10:34:06 UTC
I should have updated my bugreport. Mplayer was failing
due to another error, since fixed. xine is still broken.

Comment 7 Brian O'Reilly 2004-11-11 10:56:53 UTC
Okay, I read through the thread in the debian/ubuntu bugzilla, and there were a lot of points of similarity -- I also use nvidia drivers for my video card, and recently there were a number of gcc/libc/libc++ updates on this system, so I went back, reemerged libmikmod and nvidia-glx, and now xine plays video files again...

the exact cause of this problem appears to be related to interaction between nvidia-glx and libc6. I'd love to know the precise cause.
Comment 8 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-12 06:49:51 UTC
Same problem here, always by nvidia drivers.
I tried re-emerging nvidia-glx but nothing changes.

as an aside, and I haven't verified this by looking at the deps in the code, but after reading throught the debian/ubuntu thread, I reemerged both libmikmod *and* nvidia-glx, and now xine plays. If I can give any more information, let me know.

Already tried to re-emerge libmikmod, still not working for me.
Comment 11 Brian O'Reilly 2004-11-12 11:50:45 UTC
well.. I dunno. Something that was done by reemerging libmikmod and nvidia-glx
fixed the problem. have you since tried reemerging xine? possibly the package
maintainer could look at the debian/ubuntu thread and the system info
in these bug reports and clue us in? =)

Comment 12 Juergen Kaetzler 2004-11-19 14:29:50 UTC
Re-emerging of libmikmod and nvidia-glx - as Brian suggested in comment #7 - did the the trick... it works for me and I can use xine (again).
Comment 13 giggles1 2004-11-19 23:20:15 UTC
re-emerging libmikmod and nvidia-glx does not solve the problem for me.
Comment 14 Prakash Punnoor 2004-11-20 03:46:23 UTC
Workaround:

Remove the xine opengl output plugin (in /usr/lib/xine/plugins...) and then xine works.

I am on x86 btw, so would really like to know why the opengl plugin is doing bad things now.
Comment 15 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-22 20:37:39 UTC
Also for me the problem was opengl plugin. I wrote a modified xine-lib ebuilds which adds the opengl flag (with others), can be found on bug #72185.

Comment 16 Jan Essert 2004-12-11 05:15:32 UTC
actually, as proposed in the forums, remerging xine-lib with USE=-pic solves the problem for me. This is indeed a bug, since xine-lib pretends not to USE pic ..
Comment 17 Aaron Peterson 2004-12-26 08:00:37 UTC
reemerging nvidia-glx and that mk whatever didn't work for me...

but,

USE=-pic solves the problem for me too
Comment 18 Aaron Peterson 2005-01-03 22:09:13 UTC
this bug has a work arround... anybody know how to fix it for everyone?

I wouldn't have found this bug if it wern't still open, but, if we know how to solve it, shouldn't that make it be fixable?
Comment 19 Chris White (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-03 22:13:46 UTC
Anyone tried the latest xine-lib as of this message? I had to rework an mmx patch that wasn't working.. so it might work now.
