By default, XDM is rather ugly: it doesn't even have a backgrond color set, so instead you see those ugly gray lines. One solution is to add this line to the /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 right under "echo sessions: $sessions": /usr/X11R6/bin/xsetroot -solid black xsetroot is part of xorg-x11, and with this line, xdm has a plain black background and looks much better. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Hi, We're trying to provide this stuff more as upstream intended. So please file this bug at bugs.freedesktop.org and post the URL here, so we can track its progress with x.org. Thanks.
Here's the bug on freedesktop.org: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2478 I don't really think they're going to take the bug seriously though, not to mention the fact that Gentoo already puts modification in Xsetup_0 anyway. In fact, my Xsetup_0 file even has entries for KDM! If the kde herd can have access to default settings for a display manager here, why can't we just put in a default black background?
See bug #80225.
Marking upstream. I'd like to do something about it upstream.
