Description hagar-dunor 2019-11-16 13:47:19 UTC
Hi all,

Since the latest microcode update, my computer hangs on "loading initrd" on reboot. This means, computer boots fine on cold boot, but hangs if I then reboot.
If I don't load the microcode (using the grub method with the "early_ucode.cpio" file) and use an older version from the bios, then warm boot hanging doesn't happen.

More details: Core i9 7920x on an Asrock x299 taichi xe.
Running the microcode from the bios which is sig 0x00050654 rev 0x200005e is fine.
The microcode that causes the problem appears to be rev 0x2000065.

If additional info is needed please ask.

Best

Others report same issue here https://github.com/intel/Intel-Linux-Processor-Microcode-Data-Files/issues/21
Comment 3 Thomas Deutschmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-11-17 13:35:23 UTC
Are you using kexec or stuff like that? Or are you doing a full reboot?

A cold boot with the revision in question works?

Did you also try booting liunx-5.3.8? I.e. a version before recent disclosure?
Comment 4 hagar-dunor 2019-11-17 15:58:54 UTC
Thomas, to answer your questions:

-full reboot
-cold boot always works (no hang)
-tried 5.3.8 on your request, same behavior (hang on reboot)

I believe this bug appears because the microcode image is not built correctly; the ebuild appears to use the `-w` flag to iucode_tool, but should instead use the `--write-earlyfw` option to ensure proper byte-alignment of the microcode.

See https://github.com/intel/Intel-Linux-Processor-Microcode-Data-Files/issues/21#issuecomment-555078013
Comment 6 hagar-dunor 2019-11-18 17:09:45 UTC
I don't have the initramfs USE flag set, so installing the ebuild doesn't build the microcode in /boot. I do it manually as described here https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel_microcode#Configuration

I overlooked a key difference between the `-w` and `--write-earlyfw` options; my earlier comment does not fix the original issue.

From what I see on github, the coreos guys are rolling back 06-55-04 to rev 0x2000064 that apparently still fixes TAA. Gentoo might consider doing the same?
