hmm to be honest I am unsure about this error, but I will try to look into it. do you think it should be reported upstream?

This is probably due to the new dev-libs/check-0.13.0 that was added to the tree on October 27th. If that's the case, then yeah, it's ultimately an upstream problem, but we can change the dependency in the ebuild to <dev-libs/check-0.13.0 in the meantime.
