Description Christopher Schwan 2019-11-06 18:41:56 UTC
sbcl (without any parameters) doesn't start on my box. It aborts with the following message:

fatal error encountered in SBCL pid 8456(tid 0x7f03dd5e62c0):
can't find core file at /usr/lib/sbcl//sbcl.core

Manually setting the core using `--core /usr/lib64/sbcl/sbcl.core` circumvents the problem. I suppose this is a side-effect of the new 17.1 amd64 profiles?

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Christopher Schwan 2019-11-12 07:01:17 UTC
OK, the problem was that I didn't run `source /etc/profile`. There are two environment variables needed that are added the /etc/env.d (shouldn't there be a message reminding me?)

This can be closed.

I would like to chime in, that, I ran into this exact issue as well, and then found this bug report.

Especially since an X session keeps its environment, it might be useful to let the user know sbcl won't run properly until their shell is reloaded. Essentially, I will have to restart X, and reloging (if I ran via startx) to have sbcl run properly in my terminal after installing it.
Comment 3 John L. Poole 2021-08-18 04:39:23 UTC
Yes, I, too was stuck until I found this bug.

after "source /etc/profile" in any open shell, I was able to move forward.
Comment 4 Alexis 2023-12-27 22:57:24 UTC
Just hit this myself, so adding another vote for having a postinst message about the need to source /etc/profile in order to be able to use SBCL immediately after installation.
